Leeds History

Leeds is historically one of the key cities in the development of England. Traditionally a market town, home to agriculture, Leeds was one of the archetypal Tudor settlements. The industrial revolution however, put pay to Leeds in this vein, transforming it seemingly overnight, into a northern heartland. The city became prominent in all trades that were associated with the early Victorian era, but was perhaps most renowned for its manufacture and exportation of wool. This along with the development of the railway and the famous Liverpool canal, established Leeds as one of the big players in the dramatic changes of the 19th century. More recently, Leeds has become a more urban shaped environment with many towering office blocks accompanying the factories and mills of the previous century.

Leeds has a rich cultural background and played host to the development of a whole host of entertainers. Ernie Wise, one half of the most famous comic duo in British TV history, was born and raised in the city, as well as Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles. Brit award winning band Kaiser Chiefs are among a collection of musical artists that hail from the area. The list also sees indie band The Pigeon Detectives and Soft Cell.
